Hope you join us!

Goodreads Synopsis for Caraval

Whatever you’ve heard about Caraval, it doesn’t compare to the reality. It’s more than just a game or a performance. It’s the closest you’ll ever find to magic in this world . . .

Welcome, welcome to Caraval―Stephanie Garber’s sweeping tale of two sisters who escape their ruthless father when they enter the dangerous intrigue of a legendary game.

Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the far-away, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over.

But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever.

Each week we will post discussion questions on a part of the book. Last week we discussed the first 100 pages, you can find that post HERE. This week we went up to page 200 so the questions will be on that portion of the novel, although you could probably comment on other things that happened before or after. It doesn’t matter if you have already finished the book, feel free to post comments or ask questions.

The questions are only to serve as prompts for discussion but feel free to ask your own questions about the first 200 pages and discuss any topic of interest.

Discussion Question:

  • What do you think of the book so far?
  • Where is Julian?
  • Is she going to be dead for two days?
  • Do you think that the fiancee has more to do with the story than she thinks?
  • Where do you think this is all going?
  • Anyone have any predictions for the end, based on the first 200 pages?

Write your answers in the comments and feel free to interact with one another. Also, remember to keep it civil and allow everyone to cast their own opinions.

And obviously, from this point onward. SPOILER ALERT!

Also, come back next week on Wednesday, March 22. That week we will be at Brookie’s blog with questions up to page 300!

      1. I am going to sound silly and kinda childish but it reminded me of Shrek. I don’t know which one. The third I guess. When Rumplestiltskin asked for a day a payment. It could be a day in future or past and the day he chose was the day shrek was born so the story never happened. Anyway, I just feel like this is a terrible idea. I’ve seen time be used a payment before in other books where people trade a week or a day and it never turns out well.
And I hope you can get it working soon. You should contact maintenance or tech support or whatever it is. Maybe they can figure it out.

      2. Ahh, I’ve never seen that movie. I saw the first one and couldn’t even tell you what happens. But I can tell you who voiced the characters 🙂 I have a weird Hollywood obsession. Anyways, yes I’ve been on the whole with tech support for the last 3 days. Each time I think it gets worse. Sigh. I not a website techie and I have no idea how to fix it on my own. So we’ll see what happens
